New versus UsedWhen you add depreciation to the maintenance and repair costs it is clear that the apparent saving of a cheaper (purchase price) used van is incorrect. The table below shows the maintenance and repair costs expected for a Ford Transit 350 LWB 115ps covering 20,000 miles p.a. (source: Maintbook)
The table above shows the cost comparison of a new vehicle to that of a 1 year old and 2 year old equivalent van. The maintenance costs in the first year are negligible but the used vans do not enjoy this cost advantage. In addition the used vans incur the heavy costs in later years associated with batteries, exhausts, clutches and cambelts.
The table below shows cost comparison of the Transit 350 LWB 115ps including maintenance, repairs and depreciation.
